MIL-DTL-17060G(SH)
3.5.2.6.4 Caution plate. A plate bearing the caution "LOW NOISE MOTOR - HANDLE WITH CARE" shall
3.5.2.7 Permanent magnet motor. When specified (see 6.2), permanent magnet motors (see 6.6.17) shall meet
3.5.2.8 Variable speed drive (VSD) motor. When specified (see 6.2), motors intended for use with VSDs (see
3.5.2.8.1 Duty cycle. VSD motors shall have a duty cycle identified in 6.2. The duty cycle may include any of
the items of 6.2 normally associated with intermittent, varying, and short-time duty. Additionally, the duty cycle
shall include the following:
a.
Speed range
b.
For constant torque applications, the minimum operating speed
c.
Maximum operating speed
d. Horsepower rating at base speed (see 6.6.25.6), minimum speed and maximum speed and their respective
torque requirements
3.5.2.8.2 Operation. Service A, VSD motors driving pumps, fans, or compressors, in addition to meeting the
requirements of 3.6 for VSD motors, shall be in accordance with 3.6 for Service A motors, when powered without a
VSD, at base speed (see 6.6.25.6) with the appropriate 60 hertz voltage of 3.5.1.2(a) or (b). The synchronous speed
of the VSD motor shall be chosen to allow operation of the auxiliary at its rated speed and output with 60 hertz
power applied to the motor.
3.5.2.8.3 Maximum safe rotating speed. The maximum safe rotating speed (see 6.6.32) of the motor shall be at
least 20 percent greater than the maximum operating speed.
3.5.2.8.4 Terminal box gasket. The terminal box shall use electromagnetic interference (EMI)/environmental
gasket material to prevent EMI from being radiated from the terminal box.
3.5.2.8.5 Information plate. Variable speed drive motors shall be identified with a separate identification plate
indicating "Variable Speed Drive Duty." For constant torque applications, the minimum continuous operating speed
shall be shown. The maximum safe rotating speed (see 6.6.32) shall also be identified.
3.6 Performance. Service A and C motors shall meet the requirements of 3.6.1 through 3.6.16. VSD motors in
accordance with 3.5.2.8.2 shall meet the requirements of 3.6.1 through 3.6.16. VSD motors not in accordance with
3.6.1 Resistance. Average terminal-to-terminal winding resistance, corrected to 77 °F (25 °C), shall not differ
from the value measured during first article testing by more than the percentage specified in table VII. The
resistance balance (see 6.6.22) shall be as follows:
a. For motors with average terminal-to-terminal winding resistance less than 0.1 ohms, corrected to 77 °F
(25 °C), the resistance balance shall be not greater than ±2.5 percent.
b. For motors with an average terminal-to-terminal winding resistance greater than or equal to 0.1 ohms,
corrected to 77 °F (25 °C), the resistance balance shall be not greater than ±1.5 percent.
3.6.2 Lubrication. The lubrication system shall provide adequate lubrication of bearings for the specified
mounting position (see 3.5.1.18) and duty cycle (see 3.5.1.6). No suction of lubricant into the electrical windings
